Golf History
“It's still good sportsmanship to not pick up lost balls while they are still
rolling” Mark Twain
Golf is a very old game of which its exact origins are still vague. The origin
of golf is open to debate as to being Chinese, Dutch or Scottish. However, the
most accepted golf history theory is that this sport originated from Scotland in
the 1100s.
So far, it is generally agreed that Golf originated from a game played on the
coast of Scotland during the 15th century. Golfers would hit a pebble instead of
a ball around the sand dunes using a stick or club. After 1750, golf evolved
into the sport we know today. In 1774, Edinburgh golfers wrote the first
standardized rules for the game.
Golf courses have not always had 18 holes. The course that emerged featured 11
holes, laid-out end-to-end from the clubhouse to the far end of the property.
One played the holes out, turned around, and played the holes in, for a total of
22 holes.
In 1764, several of the holes were deemed too short, and were therefore
combined. The number was thereby reduced from 11 to 9, so that a complete round
of the links comprised 18 holes.
